In the 6th century, under Emperor Justinian I, the castle was reinforced as part of a vast Byzantine fortification system. Evidence of these different construction phases is still visible in the masonry, especially on the southern façade, where large limestone blocks are laid at the base, and upper parts combine river stones, bricks, and lime mortar.
