Northern Albania offers more than just stunning mountains it hides magical lakes, canyons, and secret springs waiting to be explored. Our 2-day journey to Jezerca Lakes reveals the wild charm of the Albanian Alps.

A Scenic Escape from Tirana to Malesi e Madhe
Leaving the bustling streets of Tirana, we embarked on a scenic drive towards the northern highlands of Malesi e Madhe. Along winding roads, surrounded by towering mountains and lush forests, the adventure had already begun. Here is the itinerary we followed:
Selca Tubs – The Perfect Refreshing Stop
Our first encounter with nature’s wonders was at Selca Tubs, an oasis of crystal-clear pools set amidst the village of Selca. The cool, fresh waters provided a perfect way to recharge under the summer sun. A dip here felt like an invitation from nature itself to slow down and soak in the beauty of the region.

Bashkimi Canyon – A Thrill in the Albanian Alps
As the journey continued deeper into Vermosh, we reached the spectacular Bashkimi Canyon (Kanioni i Bashkimit). Towering cliffs and emerald waters created a dramatic setting, impossible to resist. Jumping into the invigorating canyon waters became one of the most exciting highlights of the day.

The Mystical Blue Eye of Vuthaj – Syni i Skafkacit
Hidden in the forests of Vuthaj, the mystical Blue Eye – Syni i Skafkacit awaited. After a short 20-minute walk through the woods, this hidden spring revealed itself. Its deep blue hues and icy cold waters gave us an otherworldly experience, making it one of the most enchanting natural pools we’ve ever seen.

A Warm Stay at Vuçetaj Guesthouse
Our day ended with a traditional dinner and warm hospitality at Vuçetaj Guesthouse, nestled in the heart of the Alps. The guesthouse was the perfect resting spot to gear up for the adventure that awaited the next morning.

For travelers venturing towards Vuthaj and beyond, don’t forget to carry your passport and obtain a daily insurance at the border crossing. This step ensures a smooth and safe journey through the border areas.
The Hike to Jezerca Lakes – A Glacial Wonderland
Before dawn, the mountain air was crisp as we hopped into off-road vehicles provided by the guesthouse. In about 40 minutes, we reached Zestan, the starting point of our hike to the Jezerca Lakes.
From Zestan, a 1.5-hour hike through rocky trails and alpine meadows brought us closer to one of Albania’s most breathtaking natural treasures. The journey itself, framed by towering peaks and untouched wilderness, was just as rewarding as the destination.

Jezerca Lakes – Swimming in Serenity
Finally, the Jezerca Lakes revealed their glacial beauty. Set beneath Albania’s highest peaks, these alpine lakes shimmered in shades of blue and green. Some of us couldn’t resist the call of the wild and took a daring swim in the chilly waters—refreshing, thrilling, and unforgettable.
With the silence of the mountains surrounding us and the lakes reflecting the clear skies above, it was a moment where nature and adventure blended perfectly.

The Return Journey and Reflection
After hours of exploration and soaking in the untouched beauty of the lakes, we made our descent back towards Zestan, before returning to Tirana with our hearts full and spirits lifted.
