A weekend trip to Peja, Kosovo, offers an unforgettable experience filled with breathtaking landscapes, cultural landmarks, and outdoor adventures. Nestled at the foot of the Rugova Mountains, Peja is a gateway to some of the most scenic natural attractions in the Balkans. Whether you’re looking for hiking trails, winter sports, or historic sites, this two-day itinerary will guide you through the best places to visit.

Day 1: Weekend in Peja – Hiking Adventure to Liqeni i Liqenatit
Start your journey early and head towards Rugova Gorge, a spectacular canyon located just 25 minutes from Peja. The dramatic cliffs and winding roads make for a scenic drive. For an immersive nature experience, we recommend staying at @te_liqeni_rugove, charming wooden cabins offering panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere.
The highlight of the day is the hike to Liqeni i Liqenatit, also known as Liqeni i Kuqishtës. The trailhead is conveniently near the accommodation at an altitude of 1500m. The hike is of moderate difficulty, but during winter, the thick snow makes it more challenging. If you’re lucky, the trail will be well-trodden, but if not, be prepared for a tough yet rewarding adventure.
After about three hours of climbing, you’ll reach the stunning Liqeni i Liqenatit, situated at 1970m above sea level, above the village of Kuqishta. During winter, the lake is covered with snow, hiding its mesmerizing blue waters beneath a thick white layer. After taking in the serene views, begin your descent back to Kuqishta, which takes about an hour since the path is easier to follow downhill.
Return to @te_liqeni_rugove for a cozy evening, enjoying the crisp mountain air and preparing for the next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Weekend in Peja – Exploring Bogë, White Drin Waterfall & Gjakova
On the second day, visit Bogë, a beautiful mountain village just 15 minutes from Kuqishta. Situated at an altitude of 1400m, Bogë is one of Kosovo’s top tourist attractions. If you visit in winter, you can enjoy skiing at the local slopes, while in summer, the area is perfect for hiking and relaxation.

After exploring Boge, make your way to the stunning White Drin Waterfall, located just 11 km from Peja. The drive through Rugova Gorge is spectacular, with the Lumbardhi River accompanying your journey. The waterfall itself is a magnificent sight, plunging from a height of 30 meters. It is one of the most visited natural landmarks in Kosovo, drawing tourists all year round.
Near the waterfall lies Radavc Cave, also known as the “Sleeping Beauty.” This hidden gem beneath the Albanian Alps features extraordinary rock formations and a rich ecosystem. Estimated to be over 2 million years old, the cave stretches 3260m, although only 250m are accessible to visitors. Inside, you’ll walk through five breathtaking galleries: the entrance gallery, the block gallery, the central gallery, the Vaska gallery, and the Medusa gallery. Here, water has sculpted mesmerizing formations over the centuries, and it takes 100 years for just one centimeter of stalactite to form. Bats hibernate here from December to April or May, making it a unique ecological site.

Since 1983, the White Drin Waterfall and its surrounding area have been legally protected due to their geological and hydrological importance, covering 89.94 hectares.
Final Stop: Gjakova’s Grand Bazaar
End your weekend adventure with a visit to Gjakova, one of Kosovo’s most charming cities. On your way, stop by Deçan Monastery, a UNESCO-protected site, though access may be limited due to security measures or pandemic restrictions.
Once in Gjakova, explore the Grand Bazaar – the oldest market in Kosovo. Strolling through the bazaar is like stepping back in time, with its traditional shops, cobblestone streets, and warm hospitality. No visit is complete without trying Gjakova’s delicious local cuisine. We highly recommend dining at @hotelcarshiaejupave, where you can enjoy an authentic taste of Kosovo’s traditional dishes.

A weekend in Peja is perfect for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike, offering a mix of breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and cultural experiences. From majestic waterfalls and hidden caves to historic bazaars and picturesque mountain landscapes, Peja offers an experience that will leave you longing to return!
