Zogaj to Tarabosh Hike – Best Scenic Trail in Shkoder, Albania

For those who love exploring Albania’s natural beauty, the Zogaj to Tarabosh trail near Shkoder is a perfect day hike. This route combines ease of trekking with stunning views, making it one of the most picturesque adventures in northern Albania. Here’s how our day unfolded.

Starting the Journey in Zogaj

Our day began in Zogaj, a peaceful village tucked at the base of Mount Tarabosh, near the Montenegro border. This charming village, renowned for its scenic location and warm hospitality, was the perfect starting point for our adventure.

Life in Zogaj revolves around the natural beauty surrounding it, with fishing being the main activity for the men, while the women weave beautiful textiles on their looms. Though small in size, Zogaj is rich in tradition and hardworking people, who continue to thrive through their crafts and connection to the land and water.

Ascending to Tarabosh Ridge

The trail was straightforward, but we came prepared with long sleeves and sturdy footwear. The path weaves through areas of dense shrubs, and during the warmer months, it’s essential to stay mindful of wildlife, such as snakes.

After about two hours of hiking, we reached the ridge of Tarabosh. Here, we were greeted by spectacular dual vistas: on one side, the serene Lake Shkoder, and on the other, the vast plains of Bregu i Bunes. Walking along the ridge felt magical, as though we were floating between two worlds. It was impossible not to pause and take it all in.

Taking a Break at Golish Peak (651m)

Our journey brought us to Golish Peak, the highest point along the trail, standing at 651 meters above sea level. This was the perfect spot for a well-deserved break. We sat down, unpacked our snacks, and marveled at the views.

From here, we could see Shiroke, a picturesque village nestled by the lake, inviting us to continue our journey. The cool breeze and the sense of accomplishment made this stop even more rewarding.

Reaching Tarabosh Summit

With renewed energy, we continued towards the summit of Mount Tarabosh, which rises to 595 meters. Unfortunately, access to the summit itself was restricted due to its use as a military zone and the presence of telecommunications antennas. While we couldn’t reach the very top, the journey itself was so fulfilling that we didn’t feel let down. Every step offered spectacular views and the joy of being surrounded by unspoiled nature.

Descending to Shiroke

The descent led us to the charming village of Shiroke, a well-loved destination for its lakeside beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Walking into the village felt like stepping into a postcard, with its peaceful streets and the shimmering lake nearby.

As we wrapped up our adventure, the journey back to Tirana gave us plenty of time to reflect on the day. This hike had everything: stunning landscapes, a touch of adventure, and a deep connection to the natural wonders of Albania.
