Weekend Trip from Tirana to Shkoder: Must-See Stops

If you’re looking for the perfect weekend trip from Tirana to Shkoder, this guide covers the top must-visit places along the way. From historic sites to breathtaking landscapes, this itinerary will help you experience the best of Northern Albania in just two days.

First Stop: Lezha and the Skanderbeg Mausoleum

Our journey began in Lezha, an essential stop on any weekend trip from Tirana to Shkoder. Known for its rich history, the city is home to the Skanderbeg Mausoleum, an important symbol of Albania’s past.

This mausoleum stands where Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania’s national hero, was originally buried in 1468. While his remains were taken by Ottoman invaders, the site remains a symbol of Albanian resilience and national pride. Inside, 25 shields represent his major victories, making it a must-see for history lovers.

After immersing ourselves in Albania’s heroic past, we continued our drive toward Shkoder.

The Lead Mosque – A Must-Visit on Your Trip from Tirana to Shkoder

Arriving in Shkoder, we made our first stop at the Lead Mosque, one of the most fascinating Ottoman-era mosques in Albania. Built in 1773-1774 by Mehmet Pashe Bushati, this mosque is named after its lead-covered roof, which gives it a unique aesthetic.

The mosque is one of the few remaining from the Ottoman period, as many were destroyed during Albania’s communist regime. With its spacious courtyard and grand columns, the Lead Mosque stands as an architectural masterpiece and an important symbol of Shkodër’s Islamic heritage.

Although this site remains relatively undiscovered by many tourists, it’s a hidden gem worth visiting.

Third Stop: Mesi Bridge – A Scenic Highlight of Your Weekend Trip from Tirana to Shkoder

Next, we drove a short distance to Mesi Bridge, a beautiful stone bridge built in 1768 by Mehmet Pashë Bushati. This 108-meter-long bridge spans the Kir River, connecting Shkoder with the village of Drisht.

Surrounded by lush green landscapes and crystal-clear waters, Mesi Bridge is the perfect place for:

  • Taking scenic photos
  • Enjoying a peaceful walk
  • Admiring Ottoman-era engineering

If you’re looking for a quiet escape into nature, this stop is highly recommended!

Fourth Stop: Drisht Village – A Cultural Gem Near Shkoder

After visiting Mesi Bridge, we continued towards the village of Drisht, one of Albania’s best-preserved historical settlements. This village is home to two impressive attractions:

  • Drishti Castle – A Roman-era fortress with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. This castle once protected the Shkoder-Kosovo trade route and remains an important historical site.
  • Drishti Museum – A small museum showcasing traditional clothing, artifacts, and local history. While it’s modest in size, it offers an insightful look into the region’s past.

Drisht Village is a great stop for travelers looking to experience Albania’s history and traditional way of life.

Final Stop: The “Marubi” National Photography Museum

Our last planned stop was the “Marubi” National Photography Museum, located in the heart of Shkodër. This museum houses Albania’s oldest and most valuable photographic collection, capturing the country’s evolution over the centuries.

Unfortunately, since it was Sunday, the museum was closed—a good reminder to check opening hours before visiting! However, this gave us a perfect excuse to return to Shkoder for another trip.
