Radomire Village – Gateway to Mount Korab, the Highest Peak in Albania

Hidden deep in the mountains of northeastern Albania, Radomire is one of the most spectacular alpine villages in the country. Located in the Dibër region, near the border with North Macedonia, the village lies at the foot of Mount Korab, the highest mountain in Albania.

Radomirë is situated about 35 kilometers from the city of Peshkopi and stands at an altitude of roughly 1,250–1,500 meters above sea level. Its unique location makes it one of the most important gateways to the Korab–Koritnik Natural Park, an area known for its dramatic landscapes, alpine pastures, and mountain ecosystems.

Because of its direct access to the Korab mountain range, Radomire has become an emerging destination for mountain tourism, hiking, and nature exploration in Albania.

A Traditional Mountain Village in the Dibra Region

Life in Radomirë has always been closely connected to the surrounding mountains. For centuries, the local community relied mainly on livestock farming and alpine pastures, with shepherds moving their animals to higher elevations during the summer months.

This tradition continues today. Visitors exploring the mountains often encounter small shepherd huts where locals produce traditional dairy products such as cheese, milk, and other homemade specialties.

Agriculture also remains important in the village. Typical local products include potatoes, beans, chestnuts, milk, and dairy products, reflecting the rural character of the Dibër region.

The peaceful atmosphere and traditional lifestyle make Radomirë an excellent destination for travelers looking to experience authentic rural Albania.

Hiking Mount Korab – The Highest Peak in Albania

The biggest attraction of Radomirë is its direct access to Mount Korab, which rises to 2,764 meters above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Albania.

The hiking route from Radomirë is considered the most accessible and scenic trail to reach the summit. The trail passes through alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and high mountain slopes that reveal breathtaking views across the Korab massif.

The climb to the summit usually takes a full day and requires good physical condition, but the experience is unforgettable. From the top of Mount Korab, hikers can enjoy panoramic views stretching across both Albania and North Macedonia, standing at the highest point in the country.

For mountain lovers, reaching the summit of Korab represents one of the most rewarding hiking experiences in Albania.

Our Experience Hiking Korab from Radomirë

During our visit to Radomirë, we experienced the Korab summit hike ourselves, starting directly from the village. The adventure began very early in the morning, long before sunrise, when the mountains were still quiet and the sky slowly began to brighten.

At 5:00 AM, we started the ascent toward Mount Korab. The early hours created a magical atmosphere as the first light illuminated the alpine landscapes around us.

The climb to the summit took around 5 hours and 30 minutes, gradually leading us through alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and spectacular mountain ridges. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly impressive, revealing vast mountain landscapes stretching across the horizon.

Reaching the summit at 2,764 meters above sea level was an unforgettable moment. Standing at the highest point in Albania offered an incredible panoramic view of the Korab range and the surrounding Balkan mountains.

After spending some time enjoying the summit and taking in the scenery, we began the descent back toward Radomirë. The return hike took around 4 hours, giving us another opportunity to appreciate the dramatic landscapes from a different perspective.

In total, including time spent resting at the summit, the entire experience lasted approximately 11 hours. Although physically demanding, the journey remains one of the most rewarding adventures in Albania’s mountains.

Later that afternoon, after a well-deserved rest, we began our journey back to Tirana with unforgettable memories from one of the most spectacular hikes in the country.

Visiting the Black Lake of Radomirë

Besides hiking to Mount Korab, another beautiful activity near the village is visiting Liqeni i Zi (Black Lake), a glacial lake located high in the Korab mountains.

The lake lies at around 2,200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by alpine landscapes and rocky mountain slopes. Its crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding peaks, creating a peaceful and impressive natural setting.

During winter, the lake freezes completely, while in summer it becomes an ideal stop for hikers exploring the Korab area. Many visitors combine a hike to Black Lake with other trekking routes in the region.

For travelers who want to explore the mountains without climbing all the way to Korab’s summit, the Black Lake excursion is an excellent alternative.
