If you’re looking for a cozy and cultural destination for the holidays, Korca is the perfect place to celebrate Christmas. With its charming streets, rich history, and festive atmosphere, Korca offers a unique blend of tradition and discovery. Here’s how we spent two unforgettable days in this beautiful city, and how you can too!
Day 1: Discovering the Icons of Korca
Our Christmas journey began with a visit to the “Cathedral of Christ”, built in 1992 and now an iconic landmark of the city. Known as one of the largest cathedrals in Albania, its impressive architecture and tranquil atmosphere make it a must-see. Stepping inside, we were captivated by the grand interior and the sense of peace it brought.
Our next stop took us to @tresor_artboutique, a historic house built in 1933 and beautifully restored into a luxurious boutique hotel. This residence once belonged to Irakli Qirjako, a prominent merchant of his time, who had the walls adorned with breathtaking murals of places he visited worldwide. The murals, painted by Sotir Zografi, the last of the renowned Zografi painters, reflect the artistic and cultural depth of the era. Thanks to the meticulous restoration by the current owner, this building now stands as a stunning destination that blends history with elegance.

For accommodation, we initially chose Piki Hostel, a warm and welcoming spot known for hosting exhibitions, like the Private Collections Exhibition, showcasing shares and bonds from 1927 during the time of the Korca Republic. Unfortunately, Piki Hostel is no longer operational, but it remains part of Korca’s cultural memory as a hub that once brought together art, history, and community. We wrapped up our first day with a relaxing walk along Korca’s boulevard, soaking in the festive lights, lively music, and cheerful holiday spirit. The air was filled with laughter and warmth—an ideal way to embrace Christmas magic in this enchanting city.

Day 2: A Glimpse into Art and Photography
Our second day in Korca began with a visit to the Gjon Mili Museum, dedicated to one of the world’s most celebrated photographers. Born in Korçë, Gjon Mili gained international fame for his pioneering technique of using light in photography.
The museum features 240 of Mili’s photographs, including some of his most iconic works. Quotes from global icons adorn the walls, offering insight into Mili’s impact. One particularly striking quote came from Jean-Paul Sartre, who wrote:
“Before meeting Mili, I had only known photographers who captured images with a kind of anger, like someone who kills. Mili does not offend; he loves everything—eating, drinking, dancing. He knows Harlem better than any white man, and New York more intimately than anyone else. He is happy. He doesn’t kill—worse, he wants to enchant you.”
The highlight of the museum is Mili’s famous meeting with Pablo Picasso. During this encounter, Picasso “drew” in the air with light while Mili captured it, creating a historic image that redefined photography as art.
The Gjon Mili Museum has become one of the most visited attractions in Korca, drawing both local and international visitors. This unique experience allowed us to appreciate not only Mili’s art but also Korca’s deep connection to creativity and culture.
