In a year brimming with remarkable travels, one destination left an indelible mark on our hearts — Curraj i Eperm. Tucked deep in the Albanian Alps, this secluded village is a place where time slows, nature reigns, and every moment feels like stepping into a fairytale. So captivating was its allure that we ventured there twice in 2024, witnessing its magic unfold across two distinct seasons.
Our most recent adventure was a weekend expedition that not only challenged us physically but also rewarded us with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and the unforgettable warmth of local hospitality.

Day 1: The Journey to Isolation – Ferry Rides and Mountain Trails
Our adventure began early on a crisp Saturday morning as we departed for the remote village of Upper Curraj. Opting for the iconic Komani Lake ferry, we embarked on a three-hour voyage through winding canyons and emerald waters. This scenic cruise — marking the last of the season — delivered jaw-dropping views and set the tone for the rugged beauty that awaited us.
Upon arrival in Fierze, the real journey began. Driving deeper into the Albanian Alps, we eventually reached the Neck of Mrreth (Qafa e Mrrethit). Here, a few of us chose to abandon the vehicle and descend on foot into the valley. This 1.5-hour trek was the perfect way to fully immerse ourselves in the raw, untouched landscape, framed by towering peaks and the calming silence of nature.
By late afternoon, after an 8-9 hour journey, we finally arrived at Curraj i Eperm. The village, cradled by dramatic mountains and a glistening river, felt worlds away from the bustling cities we left behind. We settled into welcoming guesthouses: @guesthouse.prebibaj, where the hospitality was as nourishing as the traditional meals served.

Day 2: Discovering the Pearl of the Albanian Alps
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we set out to explore Curraj i Eperm, often dubbed “the pearl of the Albanian Alps.” Once reachable only on foot, the village’s isolation has preserved its authenticity and natural splendor.
In the heart of the village stands a historic church built in 1897, a silent witness to both the village’s resilience and the sweeping tides of history. Surviving communism’s oppressive era, the church is now being lovingly restored through the efforts of locals.
Later in the day, we embarked on a five-hour round-trip hike to the “Bira e Zeze” cave in Qerresh of Upper Curraj. Nestled in the Nikaj-Merturi region, famed for its caves, Bira e Zeze stands out as a remarkable natural wonder.
As we returned to the village, the evening settled quietly over the valley, allowing us a moment of reflection on this rare corner of Albania — where nature and tradition intertwine so effortlessly.

The Dual Magic: Summer and Autumn in Curraj i Eperm
While this autumnal trip gifted us crisp air and a golden landscape, our previous summer visit in August had shown us a different side of Curraj i Epërm. Back then, the alpine meadows were lush and green, the river alive with swimmers, and wildflowers colored every trail.
Both seasons showcased contrasting yet equally captivating versions of the village. Summer radiated energy, inviting outdoor adventures under the sun, while autumn whispered calm, offering solitude and reflection amid the rich hues of fall foliage.

Why Curraj i Eperm Became Our #1 Destination of 2024
Curraj i Epërm is more than just a remote village; it’s a journey into Albania’s soul. From ferry rides across Komani Lake to mountain treks and warm fireside meals, every step of the trip is filled with genuine discovery.
The resilience of its people, the untouched landscapes, and the profound sense of tranquility made it a destination that we not only visited twice — but will continue to dream about long after 2024.
