Exploring Permet: A Day of Culture, Flavors, and Adventure

In April, our journey took us to one of Albania’s most charming and adventurous destinations: Permet, known as the “City of Flowers” and the gateway to the pristine Vjosa River. With a group of 15 curious adventurers, we set out on a day-long exploration packed with history, local flavors, and adrenaline-pumping excitement. Exploring Permet means diving into a world of rich culture, delicious flavors, and breathtaking landscapes.

Discovering the Heart of Permet

Our first stop was the heart of the city itself. As we strolled through its picturesque streets, Permet revealed its warm hospitality and rich culture. A visit to the Leusa Church added a spiritual and historical layer to our experience. Nestled in the hills, the church’s intricate frescoes and serene surroundings transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into Albania’s deeply rooted Orthodox traditions.

A Taste of Permet: Gliko and Honey Liqueur

After immersing ourselves in the city’s charm, it was time to treat our taste buds. We visited the Kastrioti Honey House, a local gem celebrated for its traditional gliko (candied fruits) and artisanal products. Here, we sampled an array of flavors, from sweet honey liqueur to tangy marmalades crafted from local fruits. Each bite and sip told a story of tradition and the careful craftsmanship passed down through generations.

The warmth of our hosts and the richness of the flavors made this experience unforgettable, giving us a true taste of Permet’s culinary heritage.

The Thrill of the Vjosa River

As the sun climbed higher, so did our anticipation for the highlight of the day: rafting on the Vjosa River. Renowned as Europe’s last wild river, the Vjosa flows untamed, offering breathtaking views. Furthermore, its pristine environment feels worlds away from modern life.

We headed to the Vjosa Rafting Center, where expert guides equipped us with gear and briefed us on the adventure ahead. The energy in the group was electric as we launched our rafts into the sparkling waters.

The journey down the river was nothing short of exhilarating. With each rapid we navigated, a wave of adrenaline and laughter rippled through our group. The emerald waters, flanked by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery, provided a stunning backdrop. Moreover, the experience was not only thrilling but also deeply awe-inspiring, leaving us in absolute wonder.

A Perfect Culmination

As the day came to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the perfect blend of culture, flavor, and adventure that Permet had offered us. The city’s charm, its delicious treats, and the untamed beauty of the Vjosa River made for a truly unforgettable experience.
